According to Haiwainet, at 7:30 on November 20, the 2022 Chengdu Marathon began at the city’s Jinsha Site Museum. The first half of the race ended at the Tianfu International Financial Center. The finish line was at the Chengdu Century City International Exhibition Center.
The photos shared by netizens showed that the street was filled with tens of thousands of people and no one was wearing a mask.
A video (from 2:23) on the internet shows the contestants all wearing masks before the start of the race, but after the shooting started, most of the contestants took off their masks and ran. The track was packed. There were security guards next to the track, but all of them were wearing masks.
As reported by The Paper, from midnight on November 18 to midnight on November 19, there were 200 new COVID-19 cases in Chengdu. Thirty-four were close contact, 115 were quarantined and controlled, 12 cases were screened by medical staff, 33 cases were screened in the community and 6 cases were actively examined. As of 12 p.m. on November 20, Chengdu has 201 high-risk areas and 16 low-risk areas.
